Health

The Swedish Lapphund is a breed with few health problems and can be called a relatively healthy breed. The average lifespan is around 13 years. Despite that there are an important couple things to make note of.

Hips & Elbows

Hip dysplasia is uncommon in the breed, however it does occur despite breeder's best efforts. In order to prevent hip dysplasia breeders will make appropriate breeding decisions based on X-rays. These hip scores are either available on SKK or NKK's database or if in the USA in the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website. These hip scores are absolutely required for breeding.

Elbow dysplasia is even more uncommon, which is why it is a recommended test and not required. These results are also publicly available via SKK, NKK, or OFA.

PRA

PRA stands for Progressive Retinal Atrophy. It is a genetic degenerative disease that will eventual lead to blindness. It is easily testable by a simple DNA test. Carriers of the disease are allowed to be bred, however they must be bred to another dog that is clear. Due to easy genetic testing of these, PRA has been avoided, but it is important to know your dog's status.

EYES

Cataracts and glaucoma can occur, but are also relatively uncommon with maybe a small handful of dogs per generation affected. In the USA, all breeding dogs should have at least one CAER exam with an ophthalmologist submitted to the OFA prior to breeding. It is preferred to have testing done every one to two years for breeding animals.

OTHER

There are other diseases that are genetically uncommon, but can occur and it would be remiss of us not to mention them. These include diabetes, epilepsy, degenerative myleopathy, and cancer. All dogs effected with a serious illness should be reported to SKK so they can be documented. The incidents of these diseases are rare and breeders often take great care to avoid using affected individuals, repeating litters with problems, DM can be tested for and all breeding animals at Norrland have been cleared. We encourage you to always talk with us or any other Swedish lapphund breeder about their lines and to never be afraid to ask questions.
